Paul, those are the seed heads of foxtail barley (Hordeum jubatum)
Glad you asked Blueberry!! The 2nd photo is a ensemble of plants at the water's edge with the centerpiece being the stump of a recently cut down cottonwood tree. In the third photo, I have taken a close up of the tiny cottonwood seedling growing out of the stump. It caught my eye because usually cottonwood suckers grow out of the base of the tree.
Love the bottom four...reminds me a bit of MN, I guess. And, the bridge from the later post above has a great industrial feel (it's a rainy day here and I'm finally catching up on blogs and home).

Lovely pictures, especially the backlit grass seed heads ... at least that's what I think they are. :-)
I am trying to figure out what those things are in the 2nd and 3rd pictures. Is that flora or fauna?
